Whether you are working with an installation professional or undertaking your hardwood installation on your own, proper planning, preparation and execution is required in order to create a flawless finish. Use our tips and tricks to help guide you in selecting and laying your ideal superior floor.
1. SELECT YOUR FLOOR
If you haven't already done, use our four step process to select your wood floor. First, get an idea of the colour you prefer by browsing through our colour collections. Next, find out which woods give you your colour of choice and explore the forest to discover how different species have different grains, hardness and colour options. Choosing the right grade combined with the proper species can give you the clarity you are looking for in your wood. Step three is to understand your cut, and finally learn how all of these work together to determine the overall quality and carat of your floor. Find the colour, species grade and finish which best complements your home's decor and your lifestyle requirements. Take into consideration wear factors such as traffic and pets as scratches and heavy use may be more apparent in darker stains of wood in softer species. Room scale is also important to consider as ebony tones in small areas may make a room appear even smaller.
2. PREPARE YOUR SURFACE
It is critical to begin with the proper base surface before beginning the installation process. Several sub-floor options are available. it is crucial for you or your installer to ensure the underlay is a good match for your flooring. It is also a good idea to have a professional team sand, fill, and level your subfloor to create an ideal base before laying your hardwood.
3. LAY YOUR FLOOR
The layout and elements of your living space will aid in determining where to begin laying your boards. It is preferred to begin your flooring installation plan at the area that will be most visible so as to create the most visually attractive focal point of the surface at this location.
If your room features a fireplace, start your layout planning around the hearth. If you are using any borders or other decorative elements, lay these down first, as the eye will be drawn to these focal points, so any asymmetry or other visual inconsistencies in your floor boards will be more apparent in these locations. It is important to take care at all stages of your installation project to create a professionally laid, consistent surface.
4. MAINTAIN YOUR FLOOR
For cleaning and maintenance be sure to use products specifically designed for hardwood flooring. By using the proper products, you will ensure the longevity and quality appearance of your flooring for years to come. Don't ruin all the hard work, if you installed yourself, or the money you spent if you didn't, by putting harsh cleaners, water, or cleaning products which give you a wax build up, on your floor.
